There are several types of firewall techniques: |
Packet filter: Looks at each packet entering or leaving the network and accepts or rejects it based on user-defined rules. Packet filtering is fairly effective and transparent to users, but it is difficult to configure. In addition, it is susceptible to IP spoofing.

Application gateway: Applies security mechanisms to specific applications, such as FTP and Telnet servers. This is very effective, but can impose a performance degradation.

Circuit-level gateway: Applies security mechanisms when a TCP or UDP connection is established. Once the connection has been made, packets can flow between the hosts without further checking.
|
Proxy server: Intercepts all messages entering and leaving the network. The proxy server effectively hides the true network addresses.

In practice, many firewalls use two or more of these techniques in concert. A firewall is considered a first line of defense in protecting private information. For greater security, data can be encrypted. |

FIREWALL TECHNOLOGY |
A firewall is a software package or hardware device that acts as a selective TCP/IP filter between your network and the outside world. Firewalls implemented in hardware can either stand alone or be integrated into a router. Software firewalls simply use an existing PC with two Ethernet ports (one for the network and one for the Internet), with firewall software installed.

| A firewall acts as a security gate that selectively controls the data packets sent between your PC and the Internet. If you think of the Internet as a series of hallways, firewalls are the security doors through which some people (i.e., data) may pass and others may not. |

Questions? Hardware vs Software-based firewalls? |
• Hardware based firewalls are more secure than software firewalls because they typically have proprietary operating systems that deter hackers. Once the operating system is compromised, the firewall is next, followed by the network.

the "outside" world.
• Block inbound traffic, but permit outbound
• Block services
